First bento of 2013… well first bento I post here after a long break, too. I’ve been off the wagon for too long. But I got tired of eating out.

So this is mixed rice with chopped parsley, mint and lemon balm mixed in, falafel, iceberg lettuce, (almost!) the last of my homegrown cherry tomatoes, carrots and some homemade aioli in the small container.

Happy 2013!

Swedish weather and general stress levels have had a serious impact on my bento mojo recently. When even my coworkers started to complain that they hadn’t seen any pretty, happy lunchboxes in a while I knew it was time to make some again.
Brown rice with the last of this season’s cherry tomatoes (we cut them down now and will be replanting as soon as we get reliable periods of sunlight again), cucumber, carrots, avocado, tamagoyaki and soy sauce. My box also has some quick-pickled zucchini which the BF didn’t like as much.

A small box I made sometime before Christmas already, but forgot to post.
Mushroom risotto with cherry tomatoes and herbs as decoration, white bell pepoers, more tomatoes and some chili cheese wedges in the small box.

My bento for today – omuraisu (made with leftover restaurant rice), two frozen inarizushi, lettuce, cherry tomatos and carrot decoration.

I see a round number is coming up – oh no! And my bento mojo is already down…

The BF gets the same, but his omelette is rolled up instead of wrapped around the rice.

And these were the bentos I made yesterday with the last mini quiches from my freezer stash, leftover pasta with red pesto, frozen inarizushi and broccoli, and cherry tomatoes. The freezer stash saved me there – about time to make a new batch of quiches!

Bento #289 – Tux #3

Third and last Tux design of the week, this time modeled after the round button-style icons you get in some window managers.

More onigiri stuffed with tuna, vegetarian dumplings, broccoli, carrot, tomatos, a candy and a fishy with soy sauce.

Continuing the Tux theme with a Ninja Tux (hiding in front of a black background)!
Since I think that cheese on rice or Nori is weird, Tux is actually made out of omelette. First I split two eggs and made an egg-sheet out of the whites, then I blended the yolks and the leftover white and made some more with the yellow part. Worked pretty well, and I even have some left over for the next bento!
Details are nori.

Together with the rice I’ll have fishsticks, half an avocado, cherry tomatos and there’s also a fishy bottle with ketchup for the fishsticks. (This is actually the BF’s box – mine was smaller and the avocado didn’t look so fresh in it. But it’s still tasty, so everything is fine.)

This weeks Bento Challenge is “Penguins”!
I am a geek, so I had no choice.

Tux is an onigiri stuffed with tuna (since any good penguin wants to be stuffed with fish!). The details are nori and rice coloured with turmeric.
Then there’s cherry tomatoes, avocado (with a SuSE chameleon hiding on it), pieces of mini quiche, soy sauce fishy bottle, celery, olives and a Toblerone chocolate.

This is my own box, which is slightly smaller. I made this one first, and learned from my mistakes – hence why I like the BF’s better :)
If you’re wondering how on Earth I’m gonna close that one – I lost the lid to it a while ago, so I don’t have to worry about that <.<; I'm putting another box on top and tying it together with a napkin.
The BF's closed fine, though.

Bento #243

Sorry about the horrible lighting in this one – I was zoned out on cough syrup in the evening and had to make this in a hurry in the morning, no time to fiddle around with the camera!
Plain onigiri, homegrown cherry tomatoes and a toffee in the big compartment, a mini quiche, broccoli and a carrot heart in the small one.
I was so glad for bento staples in this one – but now I have to restock on all of them! Especially the quiches.

Inarizushi kittens playing in a broccoli forest! And carrot flowers, a fishy of soy (fits the kittens), three pieces of egglog and some grapes.

We’ll see if I can eat them. I don’t often do charaben – well, actually that’s because I really have no patience, but the few I made I had *serious* problems eating! Cuteness and food… is a hard combination for me.

Bento #194

Happy 2009!

Back from vacation!
Stirfry with scrambled egg, Turkish bell pepper and eggplant, some raw carrot slices, a cherry tomato and two dumplings with soy sauce in the lower layer.
Mixed grain rice with ume furikake in the upper layer.

The sauce is a simple Chinese stirfry sauce paradoxically containing ketchup. That stuff does go around the world…!
The recipe is simple, stir fry the ingredients of your choice (I use garlic, chili and szechuan pepper to season the oil), then put on two tablespoons of dark Chinese soy sauce, two tablespoons of rice vinegar and a squirt of ketchup. Season to taste with some sugar.
Yes… it is Chinese. Promise!
Because of the dark soy sauce it didn’t look as god in the bento as it should, but I was really feeling like it. Too bad the purple of the eggplant didn’t come out in the photo…

BF gets the same, but requested more dumplings.
