Happy new year!

First day back to work after the winter holiday hiatus today, and a new bento for tomorrow!
Crispy breaded fish, potato salad, onigiri flowers, rucola, broccoli and bell pepper strips.

I found a new, super-low-budget flower onigiri mold! Do you know what it is???
Yes… it’s the bottom of a 0,5l soda bottle! Just cut that fella open at the bottom, wash it out, salt it lightly and stuff in your rice. Works like a charm and costs you nothing (except perhaps the return money on the bottle…).
Neat trick, huh?

Bento #289 – Tux #3

Third and last Tux design of the week, this time modeled after the round button-style icons you get in some window managers.

More onigiri stuffed with tuna, vegetarian dumplings, broccoli, carrot, tomatos, a candy and a fishy with soy sauce.

Continuing the Tux theme with a Ninja Tux (hiding in front of a black background)!
Since I think that cheese on rice or Nori is weird, Tux is actually made out of omelette. First I split two eggs and made an egg-sheet out of the whites, then I blended the yolks and the leftover white and made some more with the yellow part. Worked pretty well, and I even have some left over for the next bento!
Details are nori.

Together with the rice I’ll have fishsticks, half an avocado, cherry tomatos and there’s also a fishy bottle with ketchup for the fishsticks. (This is actually the BF’s box – mine was smaller and the avocado didn’t look so fresh in it. But it’s still tasty, so everything is fine.)

This weeks Bento Challenge is “Penguins”!
I am a geek, so I had no choice.

Tux is an onigiri stuffed with tuna (since any good penguin wants to be stuffed with fish!). The details are nori and rice coloured with turmeric.
Then there’s cherry tomatoes, avocado (with a SuSE chameleon hiding on it), pieces of mini quiche, soy sauce fishy bottle, celery, olives and a Toblerone chocolate.

This is my own box, which is slightly smaller. I made this one first, and learned from my mistakes – hence why I like the BF’s better :)
If you’re wondering how on Earth I’m gonna close that one – I lost the lid to it a while ago, so I don’t have to worry about that <.<; I'm putting another box on top and tying it together with a napkin.
The BF's closed fine, though.

Bento #268

Gonna eat this before aikido practice tonight.
Rice with furikake, vegetarian dumplings, broccoli, tiny cherry tomatoes, a zucchini quiche, a soy fishy and Pez on a lettuce leaf.

The furikake aren’t vegetarian (they contain fish), but the rest is.

Bento #263

Teriyaki salmon, broccoli, asparagus and cherry tomatoes in the foreground, rice with sesame seeds in the background.
Simple and nice ^^;

Bento #245 – fish quiche

Salmon and spinach quiche with a grainy crust, couscous in tomato sauce with onions and raisins, rucola and cherry tomatoes. Olive oil and balsamico vinegar dressing in the bottle. BF gets exactly the same in the other layer. I’m a bit worried that one layer each will be enough food but I stuffed them with rich food in any case!

Bento #214 – Jiji bento

I originally planned this bento for Friday 13, but real life got in the way. So here’s my black cat (Jiji!) bento for Monday instead!
Jiji is nori, lettuce and bell pepper on rice. Then there’s asparagus, two fishsticks cut in half, carrot kinpira, a bear cup of ketchup and a pink heart-shaped mochi for dessert.

BF gets the same, but he gets some leftover bearnaise dip instead of ketchup.

Nori is so annoying to photograph! I had just cut out those when they already started to shrink, even with room-temperature rice. The photo didn’t quite do the cutouts justice either. I do pride myself on being good at papercuts, but this is just impossible! :P
