They still grow so fast you can almost watch them.
All the zucchini are in their own pots now, even the last runty one. The beef tomatoes that I already replanted are doing ok, though the ones still in the greenhouse seem to do even better – they all get their third and fourth leaves already! The zucchinis have also sprouted a third leaf, which is already shaped like a proper leaf, not the round immature shape of the starter leaves. I can see a fourth sprouting in some too!
They are a little high and leggy, so I have bound them to sticks now. I am not quite sure why, since they *should* be getting enough sun during the whole day! Then again, it has been snowing the last few days. Typical Easter weather!
I have borrowed some books and am reading up on the proper soil and pruning of peppers, tomatoes and zucchini. It looks easy enough – they all like lots of nutrition, sun and heat and need pruning to get the nutrition to the fruits. Unsurprisingly, since they all come from the same continent!
I can’t imagine how life in Europe must have been before America was discovered. No tomatoes, no peppers, no potatoes or squashes – meat was scarce save for the rich folk, so almost all nutrition came from roots and grains! Some day I shall have to try out a medieval European menu – but hopefully not too soon. (Luckily the LARPs I’ve been to have largely ignored those facts…)
The book also told me that for repotting, I should always use a spatula and hold the tomato plants by the leaves, not the sensitive stems. Oops. Hope I haven’t damaged anything so far! I held on mostly to the ground clump and didn’t shake off any earth off the roots, though.
Have a good Easter, everyone! I will be back after Easter Monday, probably.
Your plant looks nice on the window. which reminds me to start preparing for summer.
Thanks for the post
You reckon Totoro will make your plants grow faster? ;)
Of course he will!
